Passengers should be worried Pilots call for Greater security on Domestic Flights

Image
Airline staff are calling for greater security at New Zealand's domestic Airports amid fears of a possible terror attack. New Zealand has one of the most relaxed Domestic Aviation Security Systems with passengers able to use a self-check-in  kiosk, don't require documentation and aren't searched by security. Airlines Pilot Association Alpa Union security expert Dave Reynolds said pilots don't see the current system as one that  protects them in the air. "They do not know who's flying in the Aircraft they do not know what's in their cargo, that in itself is a very dangerous  situation. It's not just pilots that I say should be worried, it's passengers." New Zealand is one of the few countries in the western world that doesn't require passengers to provide identification  when they check-in, and unless the Aircraft has more than 90 seats passengers won't pass through metal detectors and  luggage screening. ...

Threat of competition hits Air New Zealand stock

Image
Shares fall 5 per cent after American Airlines deal with Qantas but travel rep says move would boost overall market.   Air New Zealand shares fell by nearly 5 per cent after news that it could face competition on its lucrative direct routes  to the United States from the world's biggest carrier, American Airlines. One fund manager said although a lot of water was yet to go under the bridge, the news was not good for Air New Zealand,  whose shares fell from $2.81 to $2.67 yesterday. "We think it's one of the better routes that they have. It's not helpful to their profit to have someone else fly on it  and I think the reaction in the share price is around this," said Salt Funds managing director Paul Harrison. American Airlines yesterday said it had deepened its relationship with Qantas and the Airlines will lodge an application  with regulators here for permission to operate transpacific services from New Zealand. Another analyst said the ne...

Bob Jones ejected from Air New Zealand flight Singer-songwriter Lizzie Marvelly was among the passengers on the flight. Air Chathams, along with Sounds Air, will from April 28 pick up regional Air services to Westport and Whakatane

Image
Air New Zealand bowing out has given other Carriers a chance to step up. Kawerau logging contractor Jacob Kajavala is tipping his safety helmet to Air Chathams, one of the unlikely little Airlines that he believes will help keep rural New Zealand connected. Air Chathams, along with Sounds Air, will from April 28 pick up regional Air services to Westport and Whakatane that Air New Zealand is abandoning because it says they are uneconomic. Air New Zealand's decision has infuriated the Westland and eastern Bay of Plenty communities. Kajavala was one of the business owners who, along with the Whakatane District Council and the chamber of commerce, sought an operator to replace Air New Zealand on the Whakatane run. The answer was Air Chathams, an Airline that has quietly been servicing the Chatham Islands since Mt Cook Airlines quit that service 30 years ago. Kajalava, who regularly used Air New Zealand, said the loss of the service would have been disastrous and adde...
