Plane Forced To Return Due To Smoke

Plane Forced To Return Due To Smoke

A plane carrying almost 50 passengers had to return to Auckland shortly after take off when smoky haze was spotted in the cockpit.

The Mount Cook Airline Flight to New Plymouth was abruptly aborted last Friday.
One Aviation monitoring website reported a lot of smoke in the cabin, but Air New Zealand refuted this.

Engineers found there was no fault with the Aircraft,an Airline spokeswoman said. The Air conditioning system was the source of the haze, when it was inadvertently switched to the highest setting.

Air New Zealand said 42 passengers were on the Flight, NZ5231. The plane returned to Auckland 16 minutes after take off due to a very light haze being detected in the cabin, spokeswoman Emma Field said.

With no evidence of fire, smoke or any other requirement for urgency, customers were disembarked as per usual procedure and re accommodated on alternate services,Field added.

The Airline said Auckland Airport contacted emergency services purely as a precautionary measure.

The plane was an ATR 72-500 turbo-prop Aircraft which seats up to 68 passengers. French Italian firm Aerei da Trasporto Regionale makes the Aircraft. The Airline said it had eleven such planes in its fleet.

Mount Cook Airline is a subsidiary of Air New Zealand. Its headquarters are at Christchurch Airport. Mount Cook Airline said it had 500 flights per week and carried over 1.8 million passengers annually.

Air NZ Profit Taking Off Due To The Negative Publicity That Has Hit It This Year

Air NZ Profit Taking Off Due To The Negative Publicity That Has Hit It This Year

Air New Zealand is set to announce a sharp increase in profit this week which the Airline will welcome as a shift in focus from the negative publicity that has hit it this year.

The Airline's underlying profit is tipped by Forsyth Barr to rise to $330 million for the year to June 30, up 29 per cent on the previous year.

Net profit is expected to rise from $182 million to $234.3 million, according to analyst Andrew Bowley who said growth could slow from here but he expected management to outline ways earnings will be lifted in the medium term.

Craigs Investment Partners, while acknowledging the inherent risk in investing in Airlines, particularly after the strong run Air NZ has had over the past two years, said the company remained in a strong position to increase earnings in the coming years.

The firm also expects earnings growth of around 30 per cent for the 2014 year followed by double digit growth in 2015. The figures would represent the strongest result in more than a decade for the Airline which is one of the best performers for its size and one of the few to have an investment grade credit rating.

The Airline carries around 13 million passengers on 200,000 Flights a year but has suffered a run of bad publicity recently prompting stern messages to staff to lift their game from chief executive Christopher Luxon. After the stranding of passengers in Hawaii, Luxon said the the Airline had badly let down customers and events like that had a big impact on the Airline's reputation in the wake of revelations of Pilots having a row on a Flight from Perth, procedures not followed during a low visibility landing in Christchurch, a former cabin crew member's involvement in importing drugs and the bussing of passengers from Christchurch to Nelson during the storm at Easter after Flight cancellations.

The bad publicity came as Air New Zealand is about to launch a new phase of growth with the arrival of the first of its 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners which will be joined by two others by the end of the year. It is also adding 777s to its fleet as it prepares to quit the last of its 747 Jumbo jets.

Forsyth Barr's Bowley said this would result in significant savings.

We were told at the recent investor day that management's relentless focus on costs should result Air NZ set to announce healthy take-off in its profit

in a flat CASK cost per available seat km ex fuel on a go forward basis. In combination with fuel burn efficiencies from newer more efficient Aircraft, cost management is a key driver of further earnings growth.

Alliances and deals with other carriers will continue to help the Airline.

Flying Buffs Face Priceless Challenge

Flying Buffs Face Priceless Challenge

A priceless 1943 Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber, one of only about 40 in the world, is set to be restored to pristine condition at Classic Flyers base over the next two years.
Classic Flyers chairman David Love said the organisation had been looking for a big new project when it heard about the Avenger and offered to lend a hand.
The Avenger Aircraft served with two squadrons, 30 and 31 with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. It's a torpedo bomber. It's got an enormous bomb bay which fits a torpedo in it, he said.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force Museum down at Wigram arranged for this particular Aircraft to be flown to Gisborne because 30 and 31 were based there.
The plane was left up to the Gisborne Aircraft Appreciation Society to restore but Classic Flyers offered to lend its expertise to help out the small club.

The Aircraft's fuselage was trucked to Tauranga and arrived late Tuesday night.
Mr Love said the clubs had both contributed $15,000 to the restoration but it was likely to cost much more to fully restore the plane.
It's an enormous beast. It took up an awful lot of the road, he said.

Mr Love said the Avenger would never be able to fly again but the team hoped to restore it to look the part, get the hydraulics working so the wings could fold up and down and be able to taxi.

Classic Flyers chief executive Andrew Gromlie said the refurbishment of the dismantled plane was extremely exciting as the plane was one of just four in New Zealand, and there were only about 40 worldwide.

Mr Gromlie said the plane was originally used by the RNZAF in low level bombing runs against ships in the Pacific theatre during World War II, particularly during the Guadalcanal campaign.
Classic Flyers staff and engineers were inspecting the Avenger to see what parts were missing, what parts could be sourced locally or overseas, and what needed to be made by hand, he said.

Mr Gromlie said right now a team of 20 including a number of Aviation enthusiasts had signed on to the project but he was keen to hear from anyone else who was willing to lend a hand, had spare parts or information on where to source them.

It's a work in progress and will be for some time. The cost to restore the plane to pristine condition is an unknown quantity at this stage but potentially it could be tens of thousands of dollars,he said.
Mr Gromlie said once fully restored the plane could be worth $500,000, but in real terms restoring this priceless slice of Aviation history was important no matter what it would cost to do so.

Anyone willing to help on the project should call Classic Flyers on 572 4000.
