Air New Zealand’s moody Dreamliner; Dinosaur Designs opens in London

AIR New Zealand’s long awaited new Dreamliner 787-9 Aircraft promises an enhanced on board experience and for this passenger at least it certainly did not disappoint.

The new planes, which will officially start flying from Auckland to Perth on October, have bigger cabin windows, softer lighting, higher humidity and a lower cabin altitude. But what do these features actually mean You feel as if you are in a movie theatre more than on a plane, kilometres in the Air. There is no horrible Air blowing out of vents above you, it is much quieter and you can control the lighting by dimming your cabin windows there are no shutters to pull down, just different lighting settings. As a result, the mood lighting is wonderful. The leather seats in the Premium Economy are wide and very comfortable there is plenty of legroom and an entertainment system that has a dedicated HBO channel which you can hear properly thanks to the quieter engines. The Business Premier Cabin is in another league entirely, with the leather armchairs offering almost complete privacy as well as a lie flat bed, a menu by New Zealand chef Peter Gordon and impeccable service. As one gentleman commented during the Flight and overheard by WISH,he was so comfortable he would happily oblige his girlfriend’s request to go on holiday anywhere in the world as long as it was on a Dreamliner.

Designs on Europe

It is almost 30 years since Louise Olsen, Stephen Ormandy and Liane Rossler started selling their handcrafted resin jewellery at Sydney’s Paddington Markets. Dinosaur Designs now has seven stores in Australia and New York and has just opened in London’s new Ham Yard Hotel. The company, now run by just Olsen and Ormandy, is famous for its beautiful sculptural jewellery and homewares. “London has emerged as a design hub over the last several years, so the time and location were right,” says Ormandy.

Arrive in style

Heading to a business meeting straight after a long-haul flight is not ideal, especially if you land before you can check into your hotel and freshen up. Etihad Airways has recognised this problem and has opened its first arrivals lounge for its business and first-class customers in Abu Dhabi International Airport. The facility, located after Customs, has showers, barbers on site to offer a wet-shave and a housekeeping service that will steam suits and dresses in 10 minutes. Etihad Airways chief commercial officer Peter Baumgartner says the new lounge “will hold particular appeal for guests with early morning arrivals”. There is now no longer any excuse not to look your best.

Glamorous haunt

A spectacular rooftop terrace with infinity pool and bar is one of the most enticing attractions of the new InterContinental Sydney Double Bay. After lying dormant for nearly six years, the former Ritz-Carlton in Double Bay has been restored to its former glory after a multi-million dollar refurbishment. The ultra-modern five-star InterContinental will include 140 guest rooms, 14 executive suites and a Royal Suite with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer sweeping views of Sydney Harbour. The hotel has a famous history, with Princess Diana, Bill Clinton and Madonna staying there as well as being the setting of Bob Hawke’s wedding to Blanche d’Alpuget. The restoration of the hotel’s grand ballroom, its marble staircase and original grand piano will well and truly ensure the return of old-world glamour.
